The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and the diaspora on the occasion, urging citizens to reflect on the virtues associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, tolerance and service to humanity.
According to Tunji-Ojo, Eid ul Mawlid provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on values that can contribute to national development and peaceful coexistence.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.
The minister also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that building and sustaining a peaceful Nigeria remains a collective responsibility.
He urged Muslims and other Nigerians celebrating the holiday to do so with restraint, mutual respect and consideration for others.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while strengthening efforts aimed at sustaining peace across the country.
He wished the Muslim faithful a joyous, peaceful and meaningful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
