‘I Would Have Held Funke Akindele Tight’ — Actress Bunmi Nelson Regrets Underestimating Her

Nigerian actress Bunmi Nelson has expressed regret over failing to recognise the potential of fellow actress Funke Akindele during the early stages of her career.

Nelson made the revelation during an interview with actress Biola Adebayo on the ‘Talk to B’ podcast, where she reflected on an opportunity she believes she missed in 2006 and 2007.

According to her, Funke Akindele had approached her at the time because she needed a house location for a film shoot. Nelson said she regularly allowed filmmakers to use her home for productions and Funke even brought veteran actress Mama Fali Werepe to the house in Magodo.

However, Nelson admitted that she did not pay enough attention to Funke at the time.

“If I knew Funke would go far like this, I would have held her tight.”

She explained that she never imagined Funke would eventually become one of the biggest names in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Nelson also recalled that Funke was encouraging people to join the Yoruba movie industry during that period, adding that the industry was not as crowded as it is today.

Reflecting on the experience, she advised people never to underestimate others because of their present circumstances.

“Don’t underestimate anyone. Don’t look down on anyone except when you’re admiring their shoe lace.”

The actress said the experience taught her an important lesson about humility, noting that life has taught her the hard way that nothing remains constant.

She acknowledged that she missed what could have been a significant opportunity to build a closer relationship with Funke at the time.

Her story has sparked conversations about recognising people's potential early, treating everyone with respect and never assuming that someone's current position determines where they will eventually reach.

What do you think about Bunmi Nelson's reflection? Can anyone really tell who will become successful in the future?
