The abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State may soon regain their freedom as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue them and dismantle the kidnapping network behind the attack.
According to security sources, the kidnappers—who reportedly abducted 39 schoolchildren and 7 teachers from three communities in the local government area—are facing increasing pressure as troops continue to block possible escape routes and strengthen surveillance operations across the region.
Emerging reports suggest that the kidnappers have scaled back some of their earlier conditions and are now concentrating mainly on ransom negotiations. This development is being viewed as a possible sign that the sustained security operations are beginning to impact the group's plans.
Sources further revealed that among the demands previously made by the kidnappers was the release of two alleged Ansaru commanders, identified as Mahmud Usman (also known as Abu Bara'a/Abbas Mukhtar) and Abubakar Abba (also known as Isah Adam/Mahmud Al-Nigeri), who were reportedly arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) last year.
Security investigations have reportedly linked the leader of the kidnapping gang to Oriire LGA. The suspect is said to be an indigene of the area who allegedly became radicalized through association with the Ansaru terrorist group.
Authorities continue to pursue intelligence-driven operations aimed at securing the safe release of all victims while ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
As rescue efforts intensify, families, community leaders, and residents remain hopeful that the victims will soon be reunited with their loved ones. The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger security measures around schools and rural communities to protect vulnerable citizens from criminal and terrorist activities.
