Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his family. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, shared the family’s statement on social media, while his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, also shared the announcement.
The family announced his passing with gratitude for “a life well lived and fought”, describing the celebrated actor as “The Lion of Lufodo.” The family also appealed to bloggers, social media influencers and members of the public to respect their privacy as they mourn.
Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and celebrated his 84th birthday in July 2026. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before beginning a career that spanned theatre, British television, international film and Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry.
He appeared in several British television productions and international films before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the most respected and recognisable figures in Nollywood.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received numerous honours, including the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. He also won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and received major lifetime achievement honours for his contribution to African cinema.
Together with his wife, Joke Silva, he was also associated with the Lufodo Group, which includes Lufodo Productions, Lufodo Distribution and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
Olu Jacobs leaves behind a legacy spanning generations of African theatre, television and film.
